Sniper kitty ROFL XD
With the whole redemtion thing . . . I also don't want to get some sort of sad and sorry back history on him that will make him seem like a more likable character because he has an excuse for being an evil prat. That will disappoint me also. I don't usually like the whole 'I'm just evil 'cause I can be' cliche thing you gte in fantasy novels but I've kinda grown accoustomed to just thinking about Ariel in that way.

I can actually see the whole Niles and CC thing from the Nanny unfolding:
Elspeth: So all this time you've been torturing and killing the people around me you were really trying to flirt with me?
Ariel: What? No good?
I'd be really [strike]jealous[/strike]disappointed if IC made Ariel's obsession with elf in any way 'romantic.' I know there are scenes which hint at the idea (like that one dreamtrail encounter... *shudders*) but I don't buy it. Ariel is an actor and a manipulator, and any hint he's made that he wants Elf for anything other than the weaponmachines is just him trying to creep her out/make her do something.
I refuse to believe otherwise XP
On another note, Tonks you should check out the Mr. and Mrs. Smith thread in the Story Den (if you haven't already). I think you'd find it amusing, based on your post ^.

I'm with you, Ama; I don't think Ariel has the capacity to love.
Moreover he's proven himself to be a sexual predator by his treatment of the shadows. I'm sure his attempted seduction of Elspeth was one of the two options you listed; he's manipulating her mind or he was trying to speed his cause along by convincing her he's not all bad.

Please remember we're a PG site - Ariel's behaviour in the books is implied - no one says outright what happened with the shadows, so we'd suggest you not be explicit here.
But I agree that Ariel seems incapable of love. (Or for that matter any other better human emotion or feeling.)

i dont think i'd really want to see ariel redeemed.
the guys a psychopath! no matter how good-looking. he's wronged too many people to be able to right those wrongs, and it would be too out of character for him to try and redeem himself..and i doubt his obsession with elf is in any way romantic..and i agree that he doesnt really seem capable of love, especially after TSK.
Ariel redeemed? No, it is simply not possible, I think. He represents everything Elspeth is not. He is the dark to her light. If he was redeemed it would offset the balance of things. For every Elspeth there needs to be an Ariel.
Besides, I would feel cheated if Ariel was redeemed in the Sending. There is nothing worse than a book/movie that rounds every character off with a happy ending. I think it treats the audience as though they are idiots. I think we all know by know that Isobelle Carmody is not your typical 'Disney' author! She writes books of substance and that is why we love her! :D
BTW - if Ariel were redeemed he probably couldn't handle the horrible things he had done in the past. He would have a lot to make up for.

lol so either way he's going to die? [act]pretends to be shattered[/act] noooo! my Ariellove! :"(
fellow arielians: ":( :|
mwahahahahaha! XD
[act]cough[/act] |:| moving on... as i've said before, i'd hate to see Ariel redeemed, after all, if he was then there would be nothing left to love (well, almost nothing), i mean, how will he make DARK side cookies when he's good? 8-|
and i bet his angelic mask becomes horrid and normal when he's good and smiles happily all the time... i mean, the reason why he's a bishie is because he has an adictive evil smile
Well put Helena!
Plus... we all know Ariel's true fate will be that he is banished to obernet, where he will launch a more successful attempt to take over the world |:|

When Ariel drops out of the Obernewtyn world in his unredeemed state, he can come live with me :D I will be his null that obeys his commands without even being required to go through all that torture to convince me!!
Arielians: *plot to takeover Mono's house* ":( |:|
You're assuming he's not already living at my house :P ... I mean... |:| No, Mono's got him; that's the place you- uh, we all want to go |:|
Ariel doesn't need to redeem himself with you guys around! :D
Exactly! Very well stated, Una!
He's perfect just the way he is [strike]And soon you will ALL agree!!![/strike] |:|
[act]waves[/act] Hi guys. Just a reminder that this is the Theories board. This discussion is quickly turning into the likes of a Sus Rid or Dining Hall thread.
We don't want to stop anyone from having fun but - hopefully you understand what we mean. There's enough places on Obernet to facilitate fun/gaming threads, and only one place - here - to actually discuss theories.
Back to theorising?
Sorry Min |:( You're absolutely right.
The problem, as I see it, with Ariel being redeemed is that it would totally undo all the effort IC's put in to proving how evil and utterly UNredeemable he really is. If she were going to even TRY giving him a goodside, we would have seen some movement towards that long before the last book; instead he's been getting MORE evil and MORE twisted as the books have progressed. It doesn't seem likely that she's even going to attempt at making us pity him in any way. *crosses fingers, just in case*

hehehe.. sorry min ~:| [act]fidgets and scuffs feet on the ground like a kid that's been caught doing something naughty[/act]
oh! what if he becomes so compleatly unredeemable that he becomes redeemable? 8-|
wait... is that even possible? :P
no, my theory is is that Isobelle will have to kill him off one way or another, so it wont really matter if he's redeemed or not :P [sub]unless he gets redeemed before he dies...[/sub] :-/
I can just see it now:
Ariel: You mean these weapons will kill EVERYTHING? Destroy the ENTIRE world? 8-| I didn't know! I... I... The only way to stop the detonation is for someone to go in there and do it manually, but the tainted air around the power source will kill whoever does it.
Elf: ~:| I should have known I wouldn't live through this...
Ariel: No! I'll do it!
*Ariel goes into the inner chamber, and succeeds in stoping the detonation but is now about to die of rotting sickness. He has just enough time to tell Elf his life's tragic story before he dies...* :"(
::)
... I hope he doesn't die of rotting sickness, though. Even if it's really quick... it would mess up his prettyness! Though I suppose some would say he deserves that after what he did to Domick, but I disagree, for obvious reasons |;)
