Okay, sorry for the slight delay in getting back to you all. And thanks to those of you who entered :D
I enjoyed each of the theories (I must say, I think that Chesire Cat's sounds exactly like what would happen in today's society), and have decided to go with Sian, as I really like the idea of peace and cooperation :) So your turn Sian!

Also, could I request that someone else judge this or that judging the time be extended to about the sixth? My dad is kidnapping me to go camping, nice of him to let me know before yesterday ::)

No problem Sian.
I don't see a problem with there being a wait for your decision: the round could still close in two weeks, but as a lot of people go away this time of year, it should be fine to wait for you to get back :)

Show that the soldier guard in Ashling who recognised Dragon and administered the drug to Matthew is a friend to misfits and explain why he has behaved in such a way as to make Elspeth think he's a bad guy.
The soldierguard captain who recognised Dragon came from the Red Queen's land on the slavers boat. He was devoted to Dragon's mother and was hiding nearby when she was attacked. He disguised himself as one of the slavers and was washed up on shore when the ship was attacked and Dragon seemingly lost at sea. He believed her to be dead and stayed in the Land, in Sutrium, looking for a way to return back to his home land. Over the years he learnt that the slave trade was growing and sought to find the man who killed the Red Queen. He rose in rank among the soldierguards and became friendly with the local slave dealer. He was constantly on the look out for anyone he had known, and was surprised when he saw Dragon alive and well in the Sutrium marketplace. He immediately tried to track down where she was, but failed. However, he remembered seeing Matthew ride away with her, and when he was to administer the drug to the newest batch of slaves he recognised him. However he could not act safely and talk to Matthew without drawing attention and blowing his cover. Unfortunately he did not receive a chance to talk to Matthew, but since his encounter with Dragon and Matthew he has been joining up with rebel forces in an attempt to learn of Dragon's fate: this is because he deduced by her reaction to Herders' attempts to take the child in the marketplace that she is against the system of govern. He now aids the rebels as much as he can and frequently arranged for the rebels to meet in the big cities undetected, and released many people who were arrested for sedition.

Yes, that's fine Sian - we're happy to wait on you, and it will only extend the judging by a few days anyway. :)
Therefore, the due date for this round is January 6th 2011.
Show that the soldier guard in Ashling who recognised Dragon and administered the drug to Matthew is a friend to misfits and explain why he has behaved in such a way as to make Elspeth think he's a bad guy.
The soldierguard who recognised Dragon actually helped her escape the Red Land with her life. We don't know exactly what happened to Dragon, but I'm inclined to believe that some elements of the story were similar to what Elspeth saw in Dragon's mind, especially the incidents on the ship (though of course it was only Dragon and her mother). The soldierguard in fact helped the much younger Dragon escape, and it did involve the use of shipfish/dolphins. This partly explains his shock at seeing her, as he has no beastspeaking Talent, and therefore had no idea that the girl had survived. He had done his best to ensure that she wasn't killed by the other men, but he had no control over what happened when she was lost overboard, and he did not see the dolphin that saved her.
There are a number of reasons for the behaviour Elspeth witnessed. The apparent soldierguard in fact IS a soldierguard, but highly ranked and close with the herder faction. He used his connections made in working his way to the Land from the Red Land to get in with the slave trade. His ultimate goal is to bring down the slave trade and return the Red Land its rightful queen. (He doesn't do things by halves. ;)) The soldierguard captain has worked up to his position through various means, but primarily through the careful use of coercion. (You see, the man is a misfit himself, capable of farseeking and coercion.) The man was forced to send the soldierguards after Dragon and Matthew because he couldn't be publically seen to be weak or to have his loyalty questioned, but when he later saw Matthew he decided to take matters into his own hands. His aim was to find a way of separating Matthew from the other slaves and find a way to help him and the Red Queen's daughter. The drugs were supposed to help make that task easier, but the man didn't know that Salamander had become involved in transporting the slaves, so he got replaced as the driver of the carriage, and was not able to get near the slaves before they were taken away.

What happened to the paranormal prisoners kept at the Govamen facility and how did their fate affect the future?

What happened to the paranormal prisoners kept at the Govamen facility and how did their fate affect the future?
The paranormal prisoners kept at the Govamen facility were experimented upon further and their latent talents were amplified and eventually brought under their conscious control. However, these talents did not lend themselves to military uses so the body in charge of the project terminated it and determined that all the paranormals should be executed.
These were the first Misfits to die and their consciousnesses survived death and went on the form the Mindstream. Here their thoughts and memories lived on to be accessed by other Misfits...and in the fullness of time, to be accessed by Elspeth. The Mindstream continues to be the final resting place for all Talents' and Beasts' consciousnesses
*Consciousnesses is a very strange word to write/type*

What happened to the paranormal prisoners kept at the Govamen facility and how did their fate affect the future?
The paranormals, helped by Cassie and Hannah, took over the complex and saved the Agyllian birds from extinction. They then organised the library complex on the West coast, leaving half their n poeple there are extended the complex to survive the great white. After being cryogenically frozen for centuries, they are thawed out by Elspeth and not believing her to be the saviour dreamed of by Hannah and Cassie, they try to stop her from continuing her quest. Tumen.
What happened to the paranormal prisoners kept at the Govamen facility and how did their fate affect the future?
The paranormal creatures and people kept as prisoners were tortured, so that their special abilities could firstly be tested as to the extent of their talents and the varieties of talents, as well as their applicability in war weapons and their replicability.
Since the scientists experimenting on these prisoners went overboard in their torture (with few limits placed on the humaneness of their experimenting methods), most of these prisoners died. When they died, their brains were also tested post mortem. Eventually even their brains were worn out by the excessive testing by the scientists, and were discarded. The results of these experiments ended up in the book: The Powers of the Mind.
Those that survived, were kept in special "mental asylums" and were allowed to reproduce, to see if the abilities were hereditary. This affected the future, because it was their children who were saved by Hannah Seraphim and who were cyrogenically frozen; thus allowing the Talents to survive the Great White. It was eventually these people who heralded the split between untalented and the new brand of humans: the Talents.
Similarly, the precursors of the Agyllians, were normal birds who were experimented on a great deal. it was the offspring of these birds that Cassy set free, and who eventually evolved into the Agyllians after the Great White.

Zidon. That's right - you remember him don't you? One of the few characters starting with Z. The Z characters always stand out, more often than not because they are simply buzzzing with electricity and sinister motives.
Well our infamous Zidon came to Obernewtyn under the guise of "seeking freedom" when he was given to Miryum by Straaka. Zidon is a horse by the way. A gifthorse. You know what they say about gifthorses don't you? Don't look a Gift Horse in the mouth. In this case, it is because Zidon has a dark secret hidden in his mouth, behind his large equine teeth, in his brain. HE IS THE DESTROYER.
His motivation in coming to Obernewtyn was clear: follow Elspeth on her expeditions everywhere to glean information from her. Naturally, being a horse, he has easy access to Galhtha and Avra and get his info from there. All animals know of Innle, so her being the Seeker is not really a secret to him. He knows EVERYTHING about her. Creepy right?
Why he wants to destroy everything is an easy enough question to answer. He said it right at the start: He wants freedom, even if he came to Obernewtyn as a "gifthorse". He wants to end the world because HE beleives the freerunning barud can only be reached by DEATH. Plus he wants to take down the humans while he is at it.
So now you know why.......what's his name again? [act]checks Encyclopedia[/act].. oh yeah Zidon if that's even his real name, is the Destroyer.
I like this one! I will probably enter.
I have a quick question. How minor are extremely minor? It is easy to know the main characters but minor and extremely minor characters are very alike. If you could please mention who are minor characters I can work out the extremely minor characetrs.
minor or extremely minor would be fine-
As a guideline Kella is too major, ditto Lina, Zarack etc
but anyone who is really only in a few sentences here or there :)

Explain how any extremely minor character in the OberChron is actually the Destroyer and find references in the text that were provide us with clues to this person's dark secret (make me laugh people!)
The Destroyer is in fact a woman by the name of Andra. She was first introduced in Obernewtyn and immediately showed favouritism for the sadistic child Ariel. And how did she do this? She gave him a gift . And what, you may well ask, was this gift? You may be sure it was dangerous and yet not so secret. After all, Andra’s daughter Lila could not help but laugh hysterically. Andra told her to be silent, but that was just her way of saying “Be quiet, she doesn’t need to know, she can’t be let know this secret.†Andra was a cook, so it stands to reason that she had been cooking something. But what? I can share the answer to that. She liked her mushrooms, just not for actual cooking. The mushrooms Andra favoured were of course dangerous if ingested. This was seen in the incident where Alexi drugged the Councilmen (Obernewtyn page 243, 2007 Penguin edition). As we learn in The Stone Key, Ariel is apparently Alexi’s son (TSK page 353, 2009 Aust. Edition). As his son, he would have happily aided his father and passed the mushrooms on when it became apparent that there was a need for them.
Now Lila was terrified of her mother, and feared her wrath greatly. She was, therefore, always careful to torment Elspeth only when Andra’s back was turned. Andra cared little for her daughter, and worked her just as hard as she did Elspeth. Andra’s soul desire that was plain for all to see was to better her position at Obernewtyn by convincing Ariel in to bonding with Lila.
Andra was not stupid. Far from it; she knew a lot of things. In fact, it was she who had advised the posts in the kitchen courtyard get fixed, for she had seen that they were rotten. However, she was not listened to and they collapsed (Obernewtyn page 84, 2007 Penguin edition). She is however, respected by some and sent sly Willie about his business, as opposed to bugging Daffyd’s uncle (Obernewtyn page 139, 2007 Penguin edition).
Now, where Andra and Lila went from Obernewtyn is unknown. However it seems she may have stayed a little while until a new cook was found uncle (Obernewtyn page 239, 2007 Penguin edition). The rest can be left to conjecture. Andra, during her time at Obernewtyn had noticed Elspeth was different from the other Misfits, just as she had noticed Ariel’s power and charms and sought to harness them for herself by making him her son-in-law. Needless to say she failed, unless of course we proceed along the lines that Lila did in fact bond with Ariel and that the women’s clothes found in his residence on Herder Isle belong to her (TSK page 874, 2009 Aust. Edition). However, it is not Lila we are concerned with, but her mother. Andra was devious, sly and secretive. She pretended little interest in the affairs of Obernewtyn, but as cook she would have heard most of the rumours, and perhaps have known about Madam Vega and Alexi’s search for weapon machines. Being power hungry she could easily have continued their research and proceeded to watch Elspeth through her friend Ariel as he haunted Elspeth on the dreamtrails. This would explain Gahltha’s reference to Ariel as the ‘one who brings destruction’ for wherever he went and whatever he did, he did at Andra’s bidding and brought with him her destruction.
Andra is the Destroyer. Don’t forget it. ;)
Explain how any extremely minor character in the OberChron is actually the Destroyer and find references in the text that were provide us with clues to this person's dark secret (make me laugh people!)
The Destroyer is........Seresh,Jakoby's sister.
In the Stone Key Jakoby tells the story of her sister Seresh, who had a deformed jaw and was taken to serve in the Earth temple. When Jakoby was allowed to see her Seresh revealed her ugliness and later said that she was "a monster among monsters".Seresh ran away and apparentely escaped on a boat. She sailed, planning to make a new life, and perhaps stop immersions on Sador. She happened to meet Ariel, who treated her well and gave her many gifts. Soon she became rude to all except Ariel, and spent all her time alone or with him. Seresh and Ariel made a plan to get Sador and destroy all on there, which was by now the only thing Seresh wanted and didn't have. Ariel led her to a place that he told her would destroy Sador, nothing else. She was told to wait until all security was removed by a girl with long black hair, pale skin and green eyes. Seresh was to follow and once all defense was removed she was meant to attack the girl and all with her, and then turn on the machine. Seresh believed this would workand she would have her revenge. The only one in Sador she would now regret harming was Jakoby, and during her time near the machine she left to find her sister and keep her away from Sador. Once she found her travelling she returned to her post and waited. Her scent is later and extra clue for Elspeth and the animals. And Seresh tried to follow the plan but......
Ariel had known Seresh's history from her father and Salamander, who found out the truth while in Sador. Ariel could tell she would be the perfect person to use for his plan, as she was homeless, strong and desperate for beauty. He planned it all, and went in her mind to remind her of the past. He manipulated her emotions to make her mean and cruel. He led her to the weaponmachines, which shows he is "the one who brings destruction". Seresh loved her sister so much that she could break free to check on her. She also didn't realise what the weaponmachines would do.
So....Seresh is the Destroyer.
(This must sound kind of complicated)

Elii is the Destroyer. Why?
- he's one of the first people we meet in the Chronicles. It makes sense to introduce your important characters early on in the piece [act]shrugs[/act]
- he has delusions of grandeur from the moment we first read him ('I'm the Lud of this expedition...' page 5 of the Popular Penguin version of Obernewtyn). This pit of darkness in him manifests over time, as he continues to believe that he's higher up and better than everyone else.
- he hurries Elspeth away, reprimanding her when she is curious of the chasm in the Silent Vale (clearly knows more about that pit in the Silent Vale than we do). He doesn't want anyone else going near it.
- just when we think we'll never see him again, he turns up as a Rebel Leader - rising up in the ranks and staying close to the action.
- he's just always seemed shifty, don't you think? :P
Right, well thanks for all the entries everyone, some interesting food for thought here, but I am going to have to declare Mono the winner [act]giggles at gifthorse puns[/act]

Explain how multicultural the society is in Elspeth's time -- including the power balances of different races; and misfits attitudes to multiculturalism. Do you think society has become more tolerant of different cultures and races after the Great White?
Society in Elspeth’s time is at odds with the different races, namely the Misfits and the gypsies, as well as Sadorians. Misfits are aptly named and live on society’s fringes because of their mental Talents, whilst gypsies and Sadorians are scorned simply because of the colour of their skin, and in the gypsies’ case because of their nomadic lifestyle. This lifestyle gave the Herders opportunity to blame the gypsies for the first plague, claiming they spread it through their travels. Whilst many landfolk are opposed to anyone who is not untalented or white, there are some who are open to new ideas; many of these are rebels, or people with rebel tendencies.
Misfits embrace the idea of multiculturalism, and desire to create peace across the Land among all races, landfolk, gypsy, Sadorian, Misfit and beast. The empaths work on this through dream manipulation, whilst the magi perform to try and persuade people to reconsider their prejudices.
I think that the Great White did nothing to ease tensions between cultures: rather it accentuated them, causing greater division to arise than before. Laws surround each of the races, anyone who is not landfolk is treated with suspicion and ill will. Gypsies are considered to be light fingered and filthy, Misfits abominations that should be destroyed, beasts property to enslave and Sadorians coloured and good only for trading. Sadorians, gypsies and Misfits are open to multiculturalism, but this would vary from person to person based on what they have seen and experienced in the way of discrimination.

No problem Mono :) It was good to have a challenge.
Rolf's sister Carryn, her bondmate and children all died in the plague, however there was more to them than people thought, including Rolf and Mona. What was this 'more'?
Note: this 'more' can be anything, from their ancestors to something even more random. Sky's the limit :)
And the challenge has been extended two weeks, and will close on April 23 :)

Carryn and her family were all secret misfits. The plague was formulated to make any person sick but to kill any misfit (Genetic mutation) who contracted it. Carryn was known as a friend of the Gypsy King and suspected by Ariel of being a go-between for the gypsies and Obernewtyn which is why he made sure she would contract the disease. Not expecting that his misfit killer would end her life, but in the hope that she would pass it to the gypsies who would then bring the plague to Obernewtyn.

Rolf's sister Carryn, her bondmate and children all died in the plague, however there was more to them than people thought, including Rolf and Mona. What was this 'more'?
Rolf's mother was actually a powerful coercer... when her new born baby Carryn died of a terrible fever she was driven mad by grief so she created a coercer illusion of Carryn and concealed her death...
Carryn-Illusion lived as a normal child growing and maturing until she met and bonded with the son of the man Rolf's mother had once loved but been unable to marry... Rolf's mother gave her illusion the skill of mask making (which was an unknown skill of Rolf's mother) and each day Carryn illusion would appear to make fine masks and leave them in her workshop... in the dead of the night Rolf's Mother would sneak into carryn's workshop and replace the mask illusions with real ones she had crafted...
This went on for many years and when Carryn Illusion's bondmate expressed his desire for children Rolf's mother created illusions of them as well...
Everything was going perfectly fine (as far as a coercer illusion can go) until the plague came.... Rolf's mother contacted it and then passed it on to Carryn's bondmate during a routine journey to drop off the masks... When Rolf's mother began to get very ill and realised what had happened she quickly coerced Rolf and Mona to believe she had died years ago, at the same time as her husband, and that Carryn and her children had been sick for weeks and had already died of the plague... she then coerced them to coerce Carryn's bondmate of what she had just coerced them ( as they also had strong coercing abilities that they didn't know they possessed and were so used of their mother coercing them they didn't even feel her probe)...
With her last coercive probe flying back inside her mind she dived into the mind stream in order to escape the pain of dying slowly... at the same moment Carryn illusion and her children illusions disappeared...
The Message of this theory: Be careful who you bond with... they may be a coercer illusion :p

Rolf's sister Carryn, her bondmate and children all died in the plague, however there was more to them than people thought, including Rolf and Mona. What was this 'more'?
Carryn was a coercer and farseeker but she was unaware of her powers for a long time and she thought she was normal for a long time. Her talent took longer to discover than most misfits, and even once she found out about her talent she managed to keep it under control. However, soon she was stressed when she struggled to hold it back. It didn't help that her family was well liked, especially Rolf, and this brought them to the attention of the Herders. This made her fear that the Herders would find out about her talent and kill her and her family for it. So she left her family, though they didn't know it. She blocked her family's talents so that they would not have to suffer as she had suffered, and so they wouldn't be in danger. She also coerced her family to make them think she was there and had a life, and had children. She had to stay near her family from a distance so she could coerce them, as well as anyone that would have seen Carryn if she was really there. She was sad that she couldn't be with her family, but she wanted to protect them and was glad to be able to see them. She still had to protect herself, but that was all. Life continued this way until Carryn heard of Obernewtyn, and decided to kill her fake self and fake family. When the plague came it was the perfect opportunity, so her fake self and children died of fake plague. Carryn then didn't have to coerce anymore, so she was free to find Obernewtyn. When she arrived she was welcomed, even though they didn't know of her past until they read her mind. Some misfits then knew what had happened, but they understood and let her stay at Obernewtyn. She joined the coercer guild, and later used her mask making talent in the magi. That is why Erit's mask reminds Elspeth of the magi masks. And so she lived at Obernewtyn and whenever she travelled she kept an eye out for her siblings.
So Carryn was a coercer and far seeker, and both of her siblings had powers she had blocked.
This idea does seem weird, but I like it.
