Why do Elspeth and Daffyd keep meeting without knowing they are going to see each other?
Daffyd is actually working for the Herders who have found out about elspeth's quest from Ariel. Though TSK seems to tell us that the Herder's has been destroyed, that was only a very small part of the Faction, the rest being in hiding to await Elf.
The only way they will know when Elf starts her quest is if they have a spy close to her. Thats what they use Daffyd for. He turns up every time Elspeth is starting out on a trip or voyage because he is secretly following her around and needs to know if this is 'the' trip that he must inform his masters of.
Why do Elspeth and Daffyd keep meeting without knowing they are going to see each other?
Because the Agyllians make it so. |:|
Elspeth and Daffyd's destinies intersect often, because Daffyd reminds Elspeth of the girl she used to be. Daffyd is a tool to keep Elspeth grounded. He reminds her of the plights of everyday commonfolk in the Land, and that outside her self absorbed world, there are real people with real problems. We catch a glimpse of Elf and Daffyd as they grow up, several times, and these "moments" are snapshots in time of two friends catching up, reminiscing about their good old times over a cup of chocca (or not). |:| Actually, it could just be the Agyllians. Those darn meddlesome birds!

Why do Elspeth and Daffyd keep meeting without knowing they are going to see each other?
Elf and Daffyd keep meeting as they do because the Agyllians need him alive to ensure that Dragon can sit on the throne once more and also to protect Elf. They need him to stay alive but they don't have enough energy to keep both him and Elf safe and protected. They only have enough strenght to keep Elf safe by guiding her 'watchers'. So they have meddled with Daffyd. Now whenever there is a chance of him being in danger he is either drawn to Elf or she to him. This is because she being the Seeker is most likely to live long enough to get to the weapon machines as well as that she has Maruman and Gahltha who's protection automatically extends to Daffyd (another Agyllian tweak). So the Agyllians have basically formed a sort of bond that works when the two are close geographically.
Now they want to keep him alive because he's important in Dragon's fight for the throne. Wanting to find Gilaine and Jow, he'll split of from the rest of the company as soon as they land. Thus he will avoid capture (see blurb of the Red Queen). But more importantly Dragon, miraculously regaining some of her memory will follow him, remembering the time he carried her to Obernewtyn after the firestorm. They will both remain safe and manage to find Gilaine, who leads them to Matthew. He then manages to convince the people that red queen jr. has come and leads them to war.
Oh and there's the misfits are drawn to other misfits, but that's just so uncreative.
Why do Elspeth and Daffyd keep meeting without knowing they are going to see eachother?
I believe that the Agyllians are behind Daffyd and Elspeth's unexpected meetings. I believe that the Agyllians are manipulating the meetings to make sure that Daffyd goes to the Westland and the Red Queen's Land with Elspeth. I think that the reason for this is that when Daffyd meets Dragon he will jog her memory. I think that when Daffyd meets Dragon all of her memories of The Red Queen's Land, the ruins and Obernewtyn will come back to her and she will be able to give Elspeth the key she needs for her quest and free the Red Queen's Land from slavery.
Why do elspeth and Daffys keep meeting without knowing they are going to see each other?
I'm surprised that no one has mentioned yet the possibility that it is because Daffyd is the destroyer. he keeps popping up in each of the books checking in on Elspeth before vanishing again.
It is particularly relevant the times he reappears, and the impact he has on Elspeth's quest. It is him who takes Dragon back to Obernewtyn at the end of Farseekers, thereby saving her and the key she carries, and helping to preserve Obernewtyn as a base for Elspeth. He is there when Matthew is taken by Salamander, forcing the Misfits to discover then journey to the red Quuen's land. He also helps reveal the identity of Salamander, who's role in the series is becoming increasingly important.
It is probable that he is being manipulated via the dreamtrails by someone such as Ariel. He would be easily influenced by his desire to rescue Gilaine and could set off the weaponmachines believing it was the only way to save her.
It is also important to note that he is one of the only known Misfits, other than Ariel who does not align himself with Obernewtyn.
Decision time.
Well done everyone. I had thought of a few of these theories, and some have got me thinking of new things. I was glad so many could think of different theories.
It was between Tonks and Aoife, both were excellent, but the winner is.....Aoife, with the creative chain link theory! Congratulations, and thank you everyone for taking part.

Congrats Aoife! :D I'd like to ask that you please wait until after Moonfair to submit the next challenge, though - there's enough going on during Moonfair that we prefer to put other comps on hold so everyone can get back into them again after Moonfair. ;D
It's awesome that so many of you are getting involved, so thank you - I hope to see your new theories after Moonfair! :D
Oh wow! I've never won a theory challenge before. Thanks Adelie!
Will do, Zieria! (although I may need a reminder come the end of Moonfair)
Iriny is described as having eyes that are two different colors. In The Stone Key, there is also a young boy abducted from the Reichler clinic described as having "yellowish hair and a wheezing way of breathing. He was fair-skinned too, but I was struck by his dual-coloured eyes, for they were like Iriny's." What is the significance, if any, of having "dual-coloured eyes," and does it relate to Elspeth's quest or some other important event in the OC?

The dual coloured eyes are a sign that someone can read people's auras without entering the dreamtrails. So in much the same way that Elf can see Kella's damaged aura when she is on the dreamtrail, Iriny and the boy can see auras at all times. Although this is a natural extension of the gypsy's abilities, other Misfits, like the boy (who I have named Fionn in honour of his hair). This is an important gift as it allows people to identify and diagnose emotional illness (such as Elf saw in Kella's aura) and is essential for guiding emotional healing. Emotional healing, much akin to beast healing, requires that people's psychological and emotional hurts are attended to before their bodies can heal.
In the traumatic and emotionally devastating showdown with the Destroyer (who will be someone she cares for *whispers Dames*) and Ariel, Elspeth with be severely hurt both physically and emotionally. Her natural healing ability will be insufficient since she lacks empathy utterly and therefore cannot emotionally heal herself. Thus, it will require the combined powers of Iriny and the healers to bring her back from the brink...
Edit: I say emotional a lot in that paragraph- but there really aren't any appropriate synonyms, try sticking affective in there and see how badly it sounds...

The common feature of the dual-coloured eyes is an indication of Iriny and the boy’s relation to each other. Iriny is a very loving and loyal person, so much so that when her bondmate Caldeko was killed she tried to join him. That her eyes are dual-coloured however means that she is very emotional at times, almost to the point of being unstable. In being unstable at times, she can be dangerous to herself and others, yet passionate about her beliefs. In relation to Elspeth’s quest this means that if she ever reaches an unstable point again anything can happen, and if she is upset by someone, for example a vindictive Ariel or the elusive Salamander, there is no telling how she will act, whether it helps Elspeth or hinders her.

The dual-coloured eyes are indication of a new kind of Talent - an ability to see through others' eyes. One eye is coloured the normal hue of the family line, and the other is the colour of the person they can connect to. Therefore, Iriny can see through one of the blonde boy's eyes, and he can see through one of Iriny's. This Talent is a product of the dreamtrails (as they can pass through time).
Cassy will use the boy to speak with Elspeth - through Iriny - and give her the final key of her quest in person, as she could not trust it to be passed through such a long time.

There is no particular significance of having dual-coloured eyes. The only reason both Iriny and the Beforetime boy have the same coloured eyes is because he's her long distant ancestor and for whatever reason she's a throwback to him, at least in respect to her eyes. Their only other remote connection is that both, in their own way, will help Elf with her quest. Iriny helps because of the secret she told Elf at the Stonehill settlement, about Evander's last words. ("I come unto thee, Sentinel. Judge my hand and let me pass, for all I have done was in your name.") She will find the meaning of these words in a later flashback involving the Beforetime boy. (He certainly didn't have the look of someone who will kill for the sake of defending a weapons complex, but people can surprise you. Of course, as with all her flashbacks, she doesn't get the full story, and doesn't know why he REALLY did what he did. He was just another victim of fate's cruel hand. Strange when what seems the cruellest of behaviour is actually mercy. But the rest of that story will be told in time.)
I really loved everyone's theories!! It was a hard decision, but I think I'm going to pick Mono as my winner! Congratulations!

In the Dark Road, we meet Hannah Seraphim (Jr) and Evander (Cassy's son). They were in the same generation, and Evander had feelings for Hannah Jr that she did not return. Why did the two of them never "hit it off" - that is, why didn't the two of them ever get married? What impact did this rejection have on Evander in his role as Drekta?

Hannah Jr was a futureteller who feared what she saw. As a young girl she foresaw Evander’s accident that resulted in his death, and warned him about it. Being young and foolish he laughed at her and said it was just a nightmare and promptly forgot it in years to come. Hannah Jr however never forgot and stayed by his side only to try and protect him. Her protectiveness, like that of a sister, got too much for Evander and he demanded to know why. She reminded him of the vision she had had, thinking that now he knew and understood more about seers that he might believe her. However, he tried to convince her that she was wrong and then distract her by flirting. Outraged that he could be so foolish she left for the mountains, never to be seen by him again. After she left he mourned for her, and searched for her whenever he neared the mountains. Hannah Jr’s rejection resulted in Evander dedicating his life to being D’rekta, including bonding with a pureblood. However he always thought that his time at Stonehill before his mother had been taken by slavers was the happiest time of his life, and always considered his adult years meaningless, simply following his mother’s path as duty called him to.
Note: I haven't read The Dark Road, so everything is purely from what I know about the two of them from TSK.

Hi Theoreticians! I will have to make this one a challenge that only lasts for 5 days, because after tomorrow, I won't have internet access for a month!! IE NO OBERNET :O So basically, if you could send in your entries by tonight/tomorrow noon at the latest, and I can announce the winner tomorrow, that would be great. Otherwise, Arwen becomes the default winner.
_________________
EDIT: It is now tomorrow. In the interests of avoiding the DPM, I thought this would be easier to just edit.
Sorry for cutting this challenge short guys; but as no one else has sent in a theory, Arwen becomes the default winner. Well done Arwen! :D

How will Jak's insects affect the future of the Land and Sador and will they have an affect on Elspeth's quest: if so, what?
How will Jak's insects affect the future of the Land and Sador and will they have an affect on Elspeth's quest: if so, what?
I believe that Jak's insects will be very slow working, however I also believe that they will clear the Land and Sador of their blacklands. I think that this will result in generations to come forgetting about the holocaust and a repetition of it may well occur. I believe that this cycle will make more effective weaponmachines and therefore destroy the whole world and truly cause a holocaust. However I don't think that Jak's insects will have any noticeable effect during Elspeth's lifetime and therefore I don't think that they will affect her quest.
I think Jak's bugs will make the Sadorians feel like they are indebted to Jak and Obernewtyn. They will send a delegation of Earthtemple priests and they will help Dragon get her memory back.

How will Jak's insects affect the future of the Land and Sador and will they have an affect on Elspeth's quest: if so, what?
Jak's insects will consume the taint of the Land and Sador and push back the boundaries of plant and animal habitation. Unknown to their creator, the a by product is produced in the insects digestive system which makes the land particularly fertile for growing grass and potatoes. When humans attempt to farm outside the traditional boundaries of the Land, they find their crops out competed by potatoes. Unwilling to live purely on starch, they instead choose to stick to their traditional lands. The animals however, thrive in this environment and what was once blacklands becomes the free-running barud. With such extensive space available for free-running, the humans find that they have no choice but to offer fair terms to the animals they once owned or risk them all running away. Over time, this active cooperation changes the thinking of humanity such that they become more considerate of others and less focussed on their own interests, insuring that weapon machines will never again be created.
Most of the animals choose to cooperate with humans, as much as the herbivores like grass, they also like carrots, which kept getting out competed by the potatoes, and the meat eaters chose to stick to where most of the herbivores were. This left the extensive grasslands/potato fields to evolve new species, mostly short in stature with high cheekbones, and which thrive on starchy foods like potatoes, have a particular liking for clover and pots of gold, and speak with highland accents.
How will Jak's insects affect the future of the Land and Sador and will they have an effect on Elspeth's quest: if so, what?
With so much knowledge of the Beforetime lost, Jak is unfortunately unaware of the potentially devastating effects of introducing an animal species into a habitat in an attempt to solve environmental problems (see cane toads). When the insects are released, they thrive in the Blacklands, voraciously devouring taint and procreating. While the original generation of the insects are immune to the effects of the taint, their offspring are not, and over the a few insect generations muatations accumulate in this population. Their waste product turns out to be a highly refined form of the taint akin to whitestick which has great potential to be refined into a biological weapons. Due to the vast numbers and rapid procreation of these insects, the Blacklands remains uninhabitable and unscrupulous people recognize the importance of this tract of land as a resource for creating weapons. Unfortunately for Elf, the Agylians reveal that despite the destruction of the weapon machines, this new threat is just as dangerous and that her quest extends to ensuring the prodcuts of the insects are never exploited and used as weapons. For our unfortunate heroine, this means her quest continues for as long as one person exist who wants to dominate over and rule others using any means necessary...poor Elf
