Dameon joins Elspeth while some children start to sing of Elspeth’s first journey to Obernewtyn. Dameon prods Elspeth about her journey to the coast, and Elspeth ponders how lonely her quest is without giving anything away to the Empath Guildmaster. They discuss Kella and Domick’s imminent bonding and Dragon’s progress in the Coercer guild. Dameon is then dragged away to dance by Lina. Elspeth avoids Roland’s eyes, having not told him the truth about the healing of her legs. She then goes on to think about the Moonfair and the Choosing ceremony, with all of the acts that accompany it. Daffyd comes over to talk to Elspeth about Gilaine, having not any clue about her whereabouts. Elspeth catches sight of Rushton and thinks about the Master of Obernewtyn going to Sutrium to meet with Brydda’s allies. Brydda had brought his parents to live at Obernewtyn, and had brought news of Pavo’s death which saddened the community. This made Elspeth think of Jik, and the prediction that had led to the boys’ death. Domick had mentioned that Ariel had become discredited with the Council, after the Soldierguards had found nothing at Obernewtyn and the White Valley. Elspeth’s thoughts move again to Rushton, and what he had said when she returned from the Mountains. She is so lost in thought she does not notice his presence beside her. They discuss Jik’s death and how Elspeth always appears t be alone, even when surrounded by people. Rushton comments that Elspeth does not really belong to Obernewtyn, and she simply says that she is glad to be home. She thinks of their ability to love each other, but says nothing as her fate does not belong to herself until she finds the weaponmachines. They then talk about Rushton’s departure the following day and his wish to find out about the rebels attitudes towards Misfits. After their discussion, they dance.
