When Elspeth tells him of Rushton and hw she plans to aid him Maruman offers to help. He calls her Innle and tells her that she must ‘seek the darkness and destroy it forever’. JesLocation: Cave of ZebkrahnLocation mentioned: ObernewtynSummary:Elspeth finds the cave entrance is hidden by a rockfall and speculates that it could be deliberate. She
enters, reaching out a probe to alert her if someone approached, and notices the glowing insects in
the tunnel.
Elspeth comes out of the tunnel into a large cavern lit by ‘a round white sphere on top of a stand’. In
the cavern there are a number of Beforetime machines, all but one of the dusty which she takes to
be the machine she grappled with. Elspeth feels a brief touch of a familiar mind and proceeds down
another tunnel into a chamber, the lantern she carries reflecting off the eyes of a stuffed Guanette
bird.
Seeing movement in the chamber Elspeth notices Cameo lying on a bed. She calls Elspeth and tells
her she should go because ‘he wants you’. Cameo reads Elspeth’s inner thought that she came
too late and protests, and explains that what Vega and Alexi did made her mind stronger. She tells
Elspeth of a true dream she had whilst awake, in which she learnt that Elspeth had something
important to do, alone, to do with the map sought by Alexi, which she says leads to the machines
that made the Great White. Cameo tells Elspeth that she must destroy the machines, telling her she
is the Seeker and fate will draw her to the machines. Elspeth cries as/when Cameo dies. When she
stops she hears Ariel laughing in the cave beside the one she is in and vows to make them pay for
what they’d done to Selmar and Cameo.
Elspeth makes her way to the other cavern and hears Vega interrogating Rushton about the Druid
and why he came to Obernewtyn instead of going to the Council to claim Obernewtyn as his
birthright, being the son of Michael Seraphim. Rushton informs her that he didn’t know for his
heritage when he got to Obernewtyn. Alexi comes up behind Elspeth and knocks her out.
When Elspeth wakes she is in the main cavern, Alexi and Vega talking about her and how Rushton
might have helped her, explaining why he fainted. When Elspeth reveals she is awake, Alexi reveals
his confidence that Elspeth can unlock the thoughts behind Marisa’s diaries. Her orders Ariel to clean
Elspeth whilst he goes to retrieve the diaries. Ariel is disgruntled but does as he is bidden. Once Ariel
and Vega also leave the cavern Elspeth discovers she is strapped to the machine she saw earlier, and
sees Rushton’s hand tied to a chair. She whispers his name and he tells her he thought she was dead
and repeats it when Elspeth tells him it was Sharna the wolves killed and that he gave himself away
because of her.
They return, Alexi carrying some letters and a notebook. He tells Elspeth he wants her to use her
ability to see what Marisa was thinking when she wrote her diaries, saying that if she tells him
where the map is he won’t use the machine and she can go back to Obernewtyn. Elspeth is defiant
and he turns on the machine, placing the diaries under her hands. Rushton attempts to distract
them by trying to anger Alexi. Elspeth clamps a block over her perceptions to prevent herself from
understanding Marisa’s thoughts. Elspeth forces her way into Rushton’s mind to discover that he
worked with his friends to save her from the machine before. Elspeth tells him his friends were on
their way and when she tries to withdraw from his mind he holds her, telling her to draw on him
to endure. Alexi realises Rushton is helping her when he moans as he has been keeping the pain
from Elspeth. Alexi threatens to kill Rushton if Elspeth does not tell him where the map is, and
Vega gets a knife. In that moment Elspeth’s block weakened and she saw the map was carved into
the doors of Obernewtyn and she saw a vision of a dark chasm in the mountains from which rose
brownish smoke. Alexi orders Vega to kill Rushton and Elspeth cries out as a voice speaks in her mind
telling her Rushton’s friends are coming. Elspeth hears running footsteps as the machine started
overheating, one of the sparks landing on her boot. As Vega goes to kill Rushton Elspeth feels a
power stir in her and realises that Rosamunde had been right about Jes killing the soldierguard with
his mind. Elspeth directs that power at Vega, killing her just as she felt flames licking at her feet. She
calls out to Rushton with her mind, sees people running and shouting, one asking if she is alive, a
question she echoes as she falls unconscious.

SutriumSummary:Matthew and Dameon insist to Elspeth that she is not well enough to attend to meeting Rushton
has called for all Misfits. Since the events in the cavern everyone at Obernewtyn knows of Rushton’s
heritage and claim to Obernewtyn, which he intends on taking to the Councilcourt to be formally
recognised after wintertime. Elspeth has not seen Rushton since the cavern, although Dameon tells
her he visited several times whilst she slept.
Dameon and Matthew intend to stay at Obernewtyn as Rushton intends on making it a secret refuge
for Misfits. Elspeth asks about the Druid, who had befriended Rushton when he had first travelled
to Obernewtyn. According to Matthew the Druid hadn’t contacted Rushton since the night Elspeth
escaped.
Elspeth thinks of Marisa’s map and the front doors and vows to herself to ensure no one learned the
truth of the maps.
Rushton is apparently unsure of what to do with his half-brother. Elspeth looks at her friends and
notices how they have changed since the night she escaped and Cameo died. Dameon asks if Elspeth
will stay at Obernewtyn to which she responds ‘I don’t think so’, yearning to travel, to sea the sea
again and to return to Rangorn.
Matthew assures her there would be a place for her at Obernewtyn and that Rushton has plans to
form his own Council comprised of guilds for each talent, in which Misfits would train together to
improve their abilities. Elspeth calls this Council a guild merge and Dameon tells her he will suggest
the name at the meeting.
Elspeth asks about the Councilmen who were sent for her. Matthew tells her that Vega left them to
Alexi who drugged them and threw them in an underground storage chamber. Rushton got them out
and told them what had happened with a few omissions, and they were happy to believe what he
said. They were told that Elspeth had run away during the battle and was almost certainly killed by
wolves. Domick comes up to the turret room where Elspeth has been since she woke, her mind and
feet still recovering, to tell them that Rushton is on his way up. The others leave so that Rushton is
alone with Elspeth.
Rushton had heard that Elspeth wanted to go to the meeting and she informs him it was just a
whim. He tells her he thought she would die or wake up senseless like Selmar. Elspeth thanks him
for his help with the machine the first time. He asks her to stay at Obernewtyn, saying that she
could help set up the guilds and choose whichever pleased her. She agrees to stay for a while, to
which he responds ‘That will do to start’. Before he leaves for the meeting Elspeth sees his pride
in Obernewtyn and he suggests that Elspeth might be able to teach him a few things. Elspeth
contemplates on how he was born to lead, to think ahead and not dwell on the past, whilst it was for
people like her to remember the past and doubt. She feels the tingle of dark power and thinks of a
dark chasm in the mountains, and that if Cameo, Maruman and Sharna were right it was her destiny
to destroy the machines of the Great White, and that she would not fail them.
