I saw that production of
Merchant of Venice as well and while I didn't dislike it as much as you did, it really wasn't Bell Shakespeare at its best. I do remember finding sections of it very jarring.
Their
Twelth Night wasn't bad. I talk about it briefly on my journal here

I've somehow never made it to one of the Botanic Garden Shakespeare sessions. I always mean to find out about them and never get around to it. Maybe this summer.
