(I didn't know where else to put such a thread but someone could move it if it doesn't work here)
I just needed help on a drawing Im trying to do on the guildmerge illustrated in the 2nd book of the Ober series. I can't seem to figure out the sitting arrangement. The passage describing it is quite a puzziler. I know that there are many of you in OberNet who could figure this out, so I ask for a little help.
I can't remember it exactly, but I've always pictured Guildmerges to have Rushton at the head of the table, of course. Down the table you'll have each guild master/mistress, with a ward one side and a guilden on the other.
I can't remember specifically who sits next to who, though, I'll have to check the book.
Thanks min, I really appreciate it. Its just been nagging me for ages!

I always saw it as being tight quarters though. Not a big expansive room, but something far more intimate. Correct me if i'm wrong, but it was the last master's study, isn't it? My memory is shocking, really. But i did always see it as being far smaller than the usual image conjured up when you think of a conference room. And i always saw Elf as sitting with Gevan or Dames. (possibly both) And Dames next to Rushton. I always saw it as a mismatched room too, not elegant or grand about it. a misfit room [img]http://s4.images.proboards.com/tongue.gif" alt=":P" border="0"/>
It was Alexi's old circular room, and the table is a long trestle table, with chairs along each side...
I just got home, so I'll pull out the section about the guildmerge:
Elspeth sits near the fire (toasting her feet in the fire)
Ceirwan sits "on the opposite side of the table"
Matthew sits opposite her
Dameon is next to Matthew
Miky & Angina sat next to Dameon
Rushton is at the head of the table
Domick is next to Rushton (on the same side of the table as Elspeth, maybe?)
Maryion is next to Domick, with an empty seat (normally Christa's) on her other side
The next mention is Roland - presumably on the other side of the vacant seat
She mentions that no one else from the Healers were present, so presumably there's another empty seat?
Finally, there's Alad (who appears to be sitting next to Elspeth)
So, a round room, with a long trestle table. At the head is Rushton. On the left (arbitarily) is Angina, Miky, Dameon, Matthew, Ceirwan. On the right is Domick, Maryon, Vacant (Christa), Roland, ?Vacant (?healer?), Alad, Elspeth (directly opposite Matthew).
That makes 7 spaces on the right (6 if I'm wrong about the vacant spot on the other side of Roland) and 5 on the left... presumably, there is the same number of spaces on one side of the table and the other, so there has to be at least 1 (if not more) vacant seat on the left.
Finally, if Matthew is opposite Elspeth and he has Dameon on one side and Ceirwan on the other, there must be a vacant seat next to Elspeth (otherwise it's not physically possible)... I always imagined that she had her feet up on that empty chair, to warm them in the fire. That implies then that there are actually 7 or 8 on the right (Elspeth's side), meaning that there are at least 2 empty seats on the other side.
Does that make sense?
It does make sense, though it sounds an awful lot like one of Lauren's Logic puzzles!!
There'd probably be a few more vacant chairs, too, though. Full guildmerge, when everyone decides to show up, is supposed to be all guildleaders, guildens and wards.
Thanks for doing that, I couldn't get to the books til I got home from work.
Estel, I can't *wait* to see your drawing of Guildmerge!!
Which has really got to make that round room awfully cramped (especially later on when the beasts join in...) I always though that the round room was smallish... Maybe it's a bit like Mary Poppins carpet bag...
i think thats a great arrangement estel! i can't wait to see your drawing - i love your drawings!
which perspective are you going to use? i always imagined i was looking at this scene from the end of the table opposite Rushton, so looking down the table. or from over Elf's shoulder/head.
i can;t wait to see it [img]http://s4.images.proboards.com/grin.gif" alt=";D" border="0"/>
good luck with it!
I always imagine it from the other end! Kind of from between Garth and Rushton so the Elspeth is the focal point in a wide shot.
Scruffy, ou've got a point about it being cramped when the beasts are there too! They'd be next to the fireplace, wouldn't they; close to Alad and Elf? Is it only Avra that attends for the Beasts though? I can't really remember.
Can't wait to see the drawing Estel, especially after all the prelim effort you've put into it! God luck [img]http://s4.images.proboards.com/smiley.gif" alt=":)" border="0"/>
thats really interesting Lucy. i always imagined seeing the scene more from Elf's perspective, i guess cause IC writes Elf in the first person and its easy to slip into her shoes and therefore, her eyes.
