It is because the show is (definitely!) not PG and we tend to keep those discussions out of here since we're trying to maintain our PG rating for Library topics.
That's why I'm assuming Game of Thrones discussion isn't in the Library either. I'll adjust the title of this thread so that people know it's not suitable for those under 18 and if it offends anyone we may just remove it in a couple of days. I feel that the majority of Obernetters are mature enough to not visit a thread that they're worried may offend them anyway.
I've been watching True Blood for the last 7 seasons and I have to say...I honestly only watch it because it's madness. Complete utter madness.
It deals with the issues you mentioned, but in such...ridiculously over the top ways I am convinced that the writers have not been taking the show seriously for years. If you want a good laugh - head to io9, and look for Meredith Woerner's True Blood recaps:
~Link~These recaps are possibly the only reason I'm actually still watching the show; because they're hilarious and amazing and I'm going to miss her reviews more than I miss the show when it finishes next week.
Good things that do keep me watching, aside from remembering that the writers must have had an absolute BALL writing it: there are a handful of characters each season that aren't The Worst: Jessica, Jason, Lafayette, Pam and Eric, Sarah Newlin - even Andy has his moments - they are all, usually, utterly hilarious. Prior seasons had their winners too - Terry and Russell Edgington and Steve Newlin (LOOOOL, talk about character development).
But every time Sookie and Bill come on screen, I want to throw things at them. The worst. WORST.
Edit: don't get me wrong on this point; Anna Paquin is great - but Sookie the character is just...unlikable. Bill Compton even more so.
This show most definitely jumped the shark a long time ago, and is apparently so far deviated from the plot of the books it could well be AU fanfiction. Last episode forever (season 7 ep 10) airs in a week and I can't wait to see how the writers send the show off, and if it's not completely bat-turd crazy I'll be disappointed (eg if it ends with "and it was all a dream", I'll actually believe it. If it ends with everyone dying from a meteor collision, I'll believe that too. But if it ends with everyone eating dinner around the table in Belfleurs, I'll be kind of angry. This madness needs a completely bonkers finale).
If you do watch it I would recommend:
a) don't watch it with parental units or children. This is HBO. Watching it with your partner is cringe-worthy enough.
b) laugh. Lots. Don't ever take this show seriously. Like, ever. It'll do your head in if you try.
c) always finish an episode of True Blood with a Meredith Woerner recap. It will reset your sanity a little.
