  July's OBC book is the fantastic, classic sci-fi novel, The Time Machine, by HG Wells.

  English novelist, historian and science writer Herbert George Wells (1866-1946) abandoned teaching and launched his literary career with a series of highly successful science-fiction novels. The Time Machine was the first of a number of these imaginative literary inventions. First published in 1895, the novel follows the adventures of a hypothetical Time Traveller who journeys into the future to find that humanity has evolved into two races; the peaceful Eloi - vegetarians who tire easily - and the carnivorous, predatory Morlocks...

  Find yourself a copy, read along and join in the discussion. The Time Machine has to be one of my favourite books of all time (lol), and I'm yet to see a screen adaption of it do it justice, though the 1960's one is much closer than the awful 2002 version that made me want to throw things at the wall. My favourite moment in the novel was - the Time Traveller's journey to the very ends of the Earth - the 'red' place near the ocean, with those terrifying, gigantic crabs. After that my next favourite moment was when he initially descends into the Morlock's lair, and in the darkness feels their little hands patting at him gently - then they start to get more urgent and grabby and it was honestly one of the most terrifying moments in a book, ever, imo.

  I have seen I think both adaptations, and I do remember that the 1960's one and the 2002 are very different. Can't quite recall if I liked either of them, but interested to read the book (if I get time!)

  Decided I might as well re-read this, since I finally finished my other book.
  
  I remember liking this a lot more the first time I read it....maybe because I hadn't seen any of the film adaptions then, and while I am a big steampunk fan, and love all things Victoriana, I found the moralising was almost a bit too heavy, this time around?
  
  Still, he journey every further in to time made me think if that episode of Futurama, where Fry, Bender, and the Professor have to keep going forwards to get back to where they began, because they couldn't travel backwards. :P

  I think it's one of those books you have to be in the right frame of mind to read. Despite it's whole 'humans will actually never learn' message I enjoyed it a lot (probably because that message spoke to frustrations I have about the way people are vs how they could be).
  I enjoyed how creepy out the Morlocks were, and found the descriptions of places and things wondrous.
  I doubt I expected much from the book either, when I set out to read it, so I was surprised, too.

  Blackbird that Futurama episode had me cracking up laughing so much. I don't know why really, I just found it so hilarious that they had to keep going forward in time to the end of time, and restart the process!!
  I also liked going to then end of the Earth, and seeing the dying sun, was quite unexpected really. I finished chapter 10, and was wondering what would happen next.
  
  And yes, it really does remind me of this story. I've just finished reading it, and it was interesting. Partially to see what the book behind the movies (which I have seen both of I think) was really like. And as you said Min, the movies didn't really do it justice.
  
  I didn't really find the Morlocks that creepy, maybe because I've seen the movie, and I just think of something like an Yeti. Though when they were grabbing hold of him, that was a little scary. What I found more creepy was 'The Grey Man' part which was deleted from most of the books, it was supposed to be in between chapter 10 and 11, you can read it on Wikisource here
