I've borrowed the book from the library, but haven't managed to read it yet... I'll get on to that!

A good thing I've been re-reading the Tortall series. Or maybe not, since I'm back at uni :P
Daine is so lovable :) I like the whole 'madness' part of the storyline and that it's solved so easily. And who doesn't love Numair? I can't wait for the books set in his past to come out. I like how the 'wild magic' is a kind of undiscovered magic that nobody really knows anything about, so the reader doesn't really know what to expect.
I haven't read this in ages, so have been looking forward to getting into it!! It was the book that set me onto fantasy books and into Tamora Pierce books. It's my favourite series!! Will get reading :)
I have actually read this book! But I'll have to re-read for proper discussioning.

This is one of my favourites. Totally agree with EI^^
Just finished first chapter - which is an achievement for me since I'm actually busy at work and
I totally forgot about the badger and the stuff about Daine's father!!
It's been so long!! I love this book!!

If I wasn't at uni and my copy of Wild Magic wasn't at home, I'd be neglecting my uni work to read it! The Immortals series is my favourite of Tamora's, and I think Wild Magic is my favourite of the four.
I love the scene where Numair first enters the fold in the guise of an eagle. And then when he turns into a man and Daine's like "Where's my hawk?!"
lol. Totally agree, Kaede! Such a funny scene!
I also love the bit where Numair tries to win over Daine's trust by talking hair woes and scrunchies with her! So adorable! ;D
As everyone would know, Tamora Pierce is my favourite author ;D Just finished a reread of all her books.
After Alanna, Daine is quite the opposite - calm, easygoing, quite the pretty catch, not born to noble privilege - a nice counterpart. I love seeing Alanna and all the favourites from the Song of the Lioness appear in these books.
Daine's "madness" is very well written - Tamora certainly did her homework! And you can see Tamora's love of animals coming out through Daine. Wouldn't we all want that, to be able to speak with our pets, to know their wants and hurts, to be able to fix those hurts?
She speaks to the animal lover in us all :)
Yup Lioness, she certainly does speak to the animal lover in all of us! :)
I agree it's good to have characters from her other books feature in this one. I think my favourite bit would have to be when Daine was healing Numair as a hawk and when he became human. Especially when he tried to befriend her by talking about hair. lol!
Woo for once I actually FINISHED the OBC book, but this one was easy to get into and I loved it!
It certainly is a good way for young teenagers to get into reading and even into fantasy. It's written simply, but the adventures that take place seem realistic to me. I remember loving it so much that it set me onto fantasy genre! I loved how I could easily believe in Tortall and Wild Magic and I lost myself in the world Pierce has created.
I remember crying when Skysong's mother died saving Daine and her friends. Poor Kit!
I do agree too - it's so nice to see characters from the previous quartet. Although, I actually read The Immortals quartet first before SOTL quartet. I think the deciding factor on favourites of TP's series is whichever you read first. As much as I loved SOTL, The Immortals is still my favourite!
Tamora peirce and the Tortall books were certainly one of my early favourites.
It took me a while to read the whole Immortals quartet, mostly due to avaliability of books at libraries (I actually read them 2, 3, 1, 4 :-/)
One of the things I found particularly interesting about Daine, was that while Alanna and Kel were doing all they could to become knights, she was absolutely horrified at the thought of her (a girls and commoner) using a sword.
The scene with Numair and their hair is another favourite.
Overall, I like the way that Daine is so different from TPs other characters, and her passion for animals.
So what series is this book in?
The Immortals Series by Tamora Pierce |;)

This is one of my favorite books of Tamora's, and its thanks to Tammy that I read Obernewtyn! I dont know if I would have gotten into the fantasy genre if not for her!
I love the bit with the "where is my hawk" :P it is one of my fav parts of a book of all time! I must go back and re-read this (though, I must admit, I probs know this book off by heart I have read it so many times :P)
I've never really been able to read TP's novels. I love fantasy genre but just not her novels for some reason.
VC - When participating in discussions, if you don't like a book/can't get into a book, perhaps if you explain why you feel this way rather than just stating it as a fact.
This helps to open up discussion rather than just simply making a personal statement - especially in a book/author specific thread like this one :)

I don't mind the Immotrals quartet, it's not bad, but I have to admit it happens to come last on list of favourite from most loved to least. I'm not 100% sure why, but I think I really do love the rough-and-tumble serious physical training nature of the others, or something. Also, I find Tamora's other key characters much more focused, and driven, and generally lacking in self-preservation instinct than Daine, who can be much more reserved and worried (only sometimes though!). The others are a bit more out-there in a way.
Having said that, I do love some of Daine's traits - I adore her reaction to being offered breeches rather than skirts. ( ;P almost called them trews then! I wonder whose influence that is?) And I like her down to earth lets-get-messy attitude. My favourtie new character of the book is Onua. Love her! Also enjoy seeing Alanna, and the way she makes friends with Daine so easily. O0o0o0o0oh, and little Thom, Aly and Alan! (L)
