Coloured pencil or just lead/graphite? If using coloured, the trick is to use shades of different colours: not just shades of red for red hair, but yellow, orange, gold, and brown. If not using colour, you can determine the thickness of the hair by how much weight you put on the pencil and how many strokes you make. For finer hair (like a blonde, for example) use a lot of light strokes, either in long 's'es for curly hair or in straight strokes that follow the curve of the skull. For thicker hair (like a brunette or a redhead) use fewer, heavier strokes.
I don't know if that helps, but that's how I do my hair when I sketch.
If it's hairstyles you have trouble with, my suggestion would be to look at a photo: find a pic on line of someone who has the hairstyle you want and is holding their head in the same position as your drawing, then use that as a guideline. I find it also helps to had a few 'flyaway' hairs, which makes it look more like a hairstyle and less like a helmet :)
Thanks Ama. I am using a graphite pencil, 'cause it would ruin it if I used colour. ~:| I get what you mean about the thickness. But how do you make different shades? It is all just coming out in the one, dark shade for me, and that is annoying because I know nothing is just one shade. :-/
What weight is your pencil? If you have a regular HB pencil, it's easier to control the shading. If not, try using your finger to smudge/blend the graphite line. That'll give you a certain amount of shading, but you won't be able to control it as well as you'd be able to with an HB, or with a combination of different weights (H9 being the lightest and hardest, and 9B being the blackest/softest). If you're using a harder lead, it will be more difficult to get any sort of shading. I find those ones don't even smudge very well.

Or you could try some other forms of shading, if you'd like. They're awful hard for people like me, though.
Oooh! I'm trying my hand at a manga-type Ariel, and I'm not failing epically! :D
...Okay, so maybe it's like, half-manga. :|
*pokes everyone who still has works in progress*
Only ten days left!
*pokes them all some more, and gives Smuffy an extra hard jab to get her Ariel submitted*
I am very upset. I finally finished my picture of Elspeth today, just in time to get it submited, but I have no scanner to put it on to the computer! Therefore, I shall have to miss this competition. :"(

Take a photo of it on your camera, mobile phone? Borrow a friends scanner. ANything BM. I'm sure it will be brillant. You've still got ten days left. You don't want to miss out on getting points for your guild do you BM.
It is due in today and I am at my Aunt's place, so I can't access any scanners.:"( But a camera just might work! Thanks for the suggestions Smuff-smuff and ICR. I will go get the camera now!!
