Everything seems pretty much organised now, and it looks like we're just working out the finer details of our arguments, so I'm not sure how much help I can be - but if there's still an extra speaker required, or I can do anything else, just let me know.
I like the idea of mentioning short-term versus long-term solutions - I think it would work most effectively in the conclusion, as a parting note.
I like the idea of RPG, but would we do it consistently with every post? And who would be the devil's advocate of the conversation (so to speak - sorry, Affirmative, I don't mean you're devils :P)? Swallow?
Couldn't we just RPG that we're presenting the debate to Swallow like:
[act]Helena waltzes up to the podium, smiling at Swallow. She suddenly remembers that this is a serious event, and a peculiar, almost constipated look settles on her face.[/act]
[act]The affirmative and Negative panels try not to burst out laughing[/act]
Helena: [act]cough[/act] [act]takes a sip of water[/act] Welcome Moonfairies, Gypsies, fellow Obernetters and the opposing......etc. etc. etc.
Is that any good?
sorry i have nothing to add.

yeah thats pretty good TSC, if the whole debate could flow in RPG style it could wor out really well.

oops I keep forgetting about this...Oh no...we're up to the organising part... *backs away slowly* integrating all our arguments into the space of four speakers 8-| (there is a word limit right?)... it was much easier coming up with random arguments... ~:| but you guys have done a great job with the opening speaker, if I write something (anything!) I'll probably subconsciously write exactly the same thing but in truth I'm hanging out for rebuttal time... can't wait to start nitpicking the other team's arguments ::)
If we presume that the other team will be taking the 'we don't need beforetime technology, its not worth the trouble and we already have our own growing knowledge and technologies'... then I think it would be rather prudent for us to point out that there are many things that are not necessary at any one given time but can prove to be invaluable at the most dire situation...eg you don't NEED to go walking around on life support when you're perfectly healthy but if unfortunately you do have an accident you expect that the resources will be there to come to your aid... sorry I'm trying to be of some use but I keep spitting out these flimsy little analogies X:-/

um... so what time is the thread opening?
It's because you're going to act "serious", Helena ;D
That doesn't have to be what we post, though, it was just an example.

lol i know TSC i was just joking lol
and who says I can't act serious? *acts serious*
see? :D i can do it.... i think....lol
how about:
[act]Helena waltzes in... sees the audience and Swallow staring at her like she has done something silly....Helena realises where she is.... acts serious...looks like she has swallowed an echidna, or something of the sort....clears her throat[/act]
Welcome Moonfairies.....etc...
EDIT: fixed it TSC!
PMSL. Helena.
Though, Is that "he" bit a typographical error?

Can somebody see if the opening statement in my post is any good? Because we need to decide which one to use.
haha i like the idea of an RPG style debate... it doesn't sound so serious.. come to think of it, it may even be a little more fun! we can be original and still debate our point!
lol
ok, TSC, i like your opening statement, assuming it's, 'Welcome Moonfairies, Gypsies, fellow Obernetters and the opposing......etc. etc. etc.'
pretty good *thumbs up*
and i can be the third speaker, i don't mind
'Technology has made communication over distances much easier for us. We can vocally speak to someone on the other side of the world over the phone, talk to people with the aid of computer/ internet programs (eg msn, ebuddy etc), and webcam each other.
Also, technology can help doctors confer with other doctors all over the world so that they can best describe an illness and fight it off effectively (ok, maybe that should be in the 'medical' one).
For example, if Kella wanted to talk to Freya but couldn't because there were no farseekers around, all she would need to do is whip out a phone and call her! (BAHAHAHAAHAH sorry, its silly i know).'
ok, disregard those last four lines, but yeah... lol
sound ok? feel free to tweak it here and there, but do you guys reckon that's an ok opening sentence?

TSC, it looks great. So much has happened within a few days. If we still need a speaker, let me know, otherwise everything looks fantastic. It's a good idea to add some RPG style, because in debating you generally want to keep people interested. If you want I can help with writing speeches if anything needs working on.
This is what I meant by opening statement:
Welcome Moonfairies, Gypsies, fellow Obernetters and the Affirmative team.
The topic for this round of debating is:
“Beforetime technology should stay in the Beforetime.â€
As the negative team, we dispute the sagacity of this statement, and believe that exploring and learning about Beforetime technology would be the best way forward for the Land. First of all, what do we mean by saying Beforetimer technology should not stay in the beforetime?
Technology is a broad concept that deals with a species' usage and knowledge of tools and crafts, and how it affects a species' ability to control and adapt to its environment. If we do not listen to the warnings of the past then how will we learn to achieve better in the future? Technology could benefit the greater community in the Land; Before timer technologies have been discovered that can provide valuable resources; including medical treatment, food, water and shelter; all important social issues within the Land.
I will be discussing the benefits that beforetime technology can have for our society. It can provide better medical treatment as well as improved security.
Our second speaker will inform you of the importance of learning from the past. They will argue that we must explore the past in order to progress to the future.
Our third speaker will consider all of the social and cultural benefits that the Beforetimers could pass on to the Land through their technology.
Our fourth speaker will sum up our argument and persuade you that leaving Beforetime technology in the past is definitely not the best solution for our people.
We of the Negative team believe that ignorance is not bliss. Ignoring and shunning the knowledge of Beforetime technology will not solve the problems of the Land or the problems of the Gypsies.
We should also mention that what the affirmative wish to do; destroying or covering up beforetime technology; is a short-term solution, while ours is a long-term solution. We're devising a solution for the future, not just the present.

We of the Negative team beliveve the ignorance is not bliss. Ignoring and shunning th knowedge of Beforetime tecnology will not solve the problems of the Gypsies, and it will not solve the problems of the Land. We do not wish to leave you, the audience, or you, the judges, with the wrong impression, we of the Negative team believe that not all technology should stay in the Beforetime, unlike the Afirmative team, who would leave all technology, whether it be destructive and harmful or peaceful and helping like medicine, behind. Knowledge of the Beforetime will help us make informed choices about whether or not to keep or distroy the technology that we could find.

he he he, sorry TSC and everybody else, if that's not particularly good, of if it's in the wrong persons speach, move/change it as you see fit.....

I come back from work and it's time for us to start arguing already...I miss everything important! :P Sounds like you guys have an awesome speech going there
Lol Helena...well, the giant 'ANNIHILATION' was eyecatching... :P
Just having a look at the affirmative opening speech. Noticed they're using quotes from the books...do any quotes from Garth, other teknoguilders, or even Matthew which are positive towards technology from the beforetime come to mind? I'll go have a bit of a look in my books and see if I can find any
I think this point that MK brought up is a good one to be rebutted by us...
"There’s always the chance that seekers of the past may misunderstand the purpose of Beforetime technology: a misunderstanding that could have drastic effects. "
Obviously, the best way to avoid misunderstandings is to educate the landpeople about beforetime technology- ie, bringing them to the forefront and explaining them instead of covering them up and pretending they don't exist.
Another one, which w've kind of discussed...
"This point is linked to the danger of obsession. Consider the Teknoguilders and the way they are completely consumed by their work. Their obsession with the past technology is dangerous - they risk their lives for it every day. "
This one re-inforces the fact that people are inquisitive and always trying to improve what's around them- they're going to start making or finding their own technologies, and if they don't know what previously created ones did in the past, things like the great white will just end up occuring again.

I've just seen the affirmative's post, despite the grammar and spelling mistakes, it's kind of spectacular, though what kind of specacular I'm not quite certain.
Do we want to add quotes and RPG it more?
I personally think that we should be short, sharp and sweet, and not let our intro totally define our argument, like they have, and that we have plenty of time for RPG; but what do the rest of you think?
EDIT: I've just seen your rebuttals Arien, they're really good, and I've added them to the store of information we've got on the second page, because I don't think we're allowed to Rebut in our opening statement....?

i htink we shouldn't RPG it in the first one, but the rest, particularly the last one, would be good... we need a demo, like a play, about what would happen if we did ignore the Beforetime tech....lol ..... i edited ^^^ just incase no one noticed....

I agree with you TSK, short and sweet sounds good. So Helena's our first speaker, Nef has agreed to do either 2nd or 4th, Ravyn has offered to do 3rd and Queen Arwen has said she can do any leftover.
