Last nights episode was very good!
The idea of hearing peoples thoughts has been done before, but it was done very well this time. The fact that Toshiko could hear the thoughts of her colleagues made for some great drama. And not being able to hear Jacks thoughts was interesting.
Tosh: Why couldn't i hear your thoughts?
Jack: i don't know. I could feel you...
Tosh: It's like you were dead...
So maybe Jack is still dead (or rather undead) and thats why he can't die?
Daniela Denby-Ashe was superb as Mary. She's a familiar face on British screens, mostly for her potrayal of Janey in the sitcom 'My Family'. This was probably her raunchiest role though...
Aha!! I knew I'd seen her before! I saw My Family on a plane once, wish I could find the series over here though...
I absolutely loved finding out something about Tosh!! That was a brilliant episode! And the suspense around Jack, again - she tried to read his thoughts and he turned around instantly (oddly, reminding me of Selmar in Obernewtyn when Elspeth probes her and Selmar just looks back in her head ie "why are you doing that?!")
More mysteries...
I hope it doesn't mean he's dead...though your post in the Doc Who thread, about the Doctor not exactly being happy to see Jack in season 3...it might be something to do with the timeline being disturbed/wronged because Jack's still there...sort of...how initially on Satellite 5 they stop the News, and that brings on the 100 years of nothing leading up to the Daleks running all the game shows...the Doctor standing there going "but this is wrong...and it's all my fault" sort of stuff. Anyway!
Brilliant episode!! Bring on next week's!
You could be on to something there with that theory Min. I guess we'll have to wait till next year to find out.
BTW: Series 1-4 of My Family is out on DVD, so you could try Amazon UK. Region 2 DVD's will work fine in Australia
Torchwood is out on DVD on Boxing Day [img]http://s3.images.proboards.com/cheesy.gif" alt=":D" border="0"/>
Dammit, I missed last night's ep. (Was lured to the pub to eat pudding and drink Christmassy J20 style drinks) Will have to try wrestle for control of the TV on Wed to see the repeat. Must...not...click...spoilers...
I checked on the DVD release after we talked about it the other day.
Seems they're only releasing the a box set of the first five episodes on Boxing Day. Think i might wait for the complete series.
I believe that BBC3 repeats Torchwood a couple of times in the week, so its worth checking
Boxing day, huh? Yay! That means it will be out in time for my friend in England to buy it for my b-day!! [img]http://s3.images.proboards.com/smiley.gif" alt=":)" border="0"/> lol, I've been hanging out for Torchwood for ages now, and she's been bugging me with it. Been sooo tempted to click those spoilers .... [img]http://s3.images.proboards.com/wink.gif" alt=";)" border="0"/>
Oush, wasn't that a good episode [img]http://s3.images.proboards.com/smiley.gif" alt=":)" border="0"/> ?
I loved Suzie!! She was so brilliant, we saw her for all of half an episode at the beginning and it really felt like you already knew her when she came back...god she was insane...and I loved it how Tosh and Owen were scared of her/p!ssed off at her.
Jack was the main reason I wanted to post about that ep though - at the end, when Suzie couldn't die...until they destroyed the glove. Do you think it's a similar thing with Jack? I know it'd be far too coincidental for Jack to be connected to the other glove, but what if it's the same sort of deal with him?
And...what on earth were Jack and Ianto doing with the stopwatch after everyone left? I just didn't get that part *feels silly*
I'm a big fan of the short-lived cult series "Ultraviolet", which was about a secret vampire-hunting organisation in modern day London.
When I asked a pommy friend of mine what "Torchwood" was like, he said:
"It's like Ultraviolet transposed into the Doctor Who universe... with a lot of sexed up soap opera stuff going on in between the main action"
Is this an accurate assesment?
If so, I might give it a look....
No, no I didn't mean that Jack was connected to another glove...but that Jack's under a similar "curse", for want of a better word - he can't die, because whatever it is that he was connected to (and I'd put my money on the Tardis) is keeping him alive.
Ianto and Jack having an affair - well, that still doesn't explain the stopwatch [img]http://s3.images.proboards.com/tongue.gif" alt=":P" border="0"/>
I was under the impression that Ianto hates Jack, after the Lisa incident.

I think you're onto something with the Tardis being jacks connection. Rose looked into the heart of the Tardis (aparently a small portable black hole called The Eye of Harmony). It is doubtful that the Tardis would ever be destroyed, so i suspect Jack may live forever.
Well, you know what Jacks sexal habits are like. Maybe they're timing something specific? [img]http://s3.images.proboards.com/wink.gif" alt=";)" border="0"/>

Oh my god, I didn't see that!! Which episode was that in??
Thank you everyone for the info on Ultraviolet, it sounds *very* interesting - so, was the movie had nothing to do with it then, if memory serves about the movie...
And I guess if Jack has this curse/connection to the Tardis...that's why Jack is clinging to any little bits of the Doctor/Tardis he can find, and searching for them. Maybe he realises it's his connection, and it's not just (what I thought previously) that he wants to go back to 'the good ol' innocent days'.
I'd be very surprised if Ianto was having an affair with Jack after how much Ianto's said in previous episodes how much he hates Jack...but my god, the stopwatch thing doesn't have that many more explanations!! LOL!!

It's been in the episodes since the start. You never get a solid look at it, the best look at it so far was in Small Worlds when Jack is looking at the rose petals on his desk. You see it in the bottom corner. The interview i read said it would take 500 years for it to properly grow... but considering Jack can't die, i suppose he's got all the time in the world...
gods, i'm getting so frustrated, i want the next episode so badly, but the file share thing my brother uses hasn't got it yet. *scowls* and this is one of the episodes i really wanted to see.

oooohhhh Min... yeah that's slow [img]http://s3.images.proboards.com/tongue.gif" alt=":P" border="0"/> Torchwood used to be the codename for the new series of Doctor Who when they were still in production. They didn't want people to catch on that they were coming up with a new Doctor Who. [img]http://s3.images.proboards.com/tongue.gif" alt=":P" border="0"/> They just fell in love with the name so much that they thought it would be a lark to use it in the series, and then it turned into a spin off from there when they invented Jack and were forced to leave him.
The writing/plot reason why they decided to leave Jack on Satellite 5 was because they wanted Rose to handle the Doctor's change on her own. They knew Jack would simply take it in his stride, and Rose would take her cues from him. Without Jack, it made for a better character development between Rose and the Doctor. So they came up with Torchwood because they couldn't leave his character alone. (and how could you?)
I know *hits head against wall many times* I can't believe I didn't pick that up...
Exactly - Jack couldn't just be left there, everyone loved him (though that was a v.good reason for them to leave him at the end). I'm hanging out for this crossover we're supposed to see in Series 3 of Who, it'll be a killer..!
Min: Sorry to mention it again, but really! I can't believe you didn't spot that! [img]http://s3.images.proboards.com/wink.gif" alt=";)" border="0"/>
Maybe the stopwatch thing will be explained in a future episode. It is intriguing. Or maybe thats why they've put it in. It may have no meaning, but it keeps the fans guessing

OMG just OMG that episode has made it for me.
I feel like they've finally hit their stride, i was a bit worried after the Countrycide episode, but that is what i call a well written beautifully acted episode. It was a bugger Tosh wasn't in it more, her character kind of drowned among the others, but that was more because she didn't want anything to do with Suzie...
And the questions! ack! how brilliant! I don't think Jack would be connected to another glove, but it raises questions, doesn't it? more questions... but oh so brilliantly done! I even loved Gwen in this one, where most of the others left me wondering if she was the perfect choice, but it see it now.
Knew this episode would be great [img]http://s3.images.proboards.com/cheesy.gif" alt=":D" border="0"/> [img]http://s3.images.proboards.com/cheesy.gif" alt=":D" border="0"/> So glad i finally got to see it... and on the eve of the next one *rolls eyes* which i can't access until the 14th anyway, cursed download limit!
I love how Ianto is displaying his tech ability. And it makes me wonder now, what exactly did he do at Torchwood One? I read an interview somewhere where one of the writers used an interesting word. They said Ianto was 'reduced' to being the level of a butler. He moved to Cardiff for Lisa, he knew she would have a better chance of being secreted away there, then in one of the larger Torchwoods. In the counsellor session on the Torchwood website, Ianto says that he's taking a kind of demotion, or implies it, i can't really remember right now.
The team needed someone to replace Suzie's roll, and despite what Suzie said, it's not Gwen. Sure, Gwen took the space, but she's not anything close to an engineer, she's a profiler. So it would be nice to have someone there who can actually work with the stuff. A bit more than Tosh can.
Didn't you love the moment when they pulled out the knife, and there's this ominous air of trepidation as it's presented to the others, and you're almost holding your breath waiting for the horrible thing to come, and then realise that they're just waiting for Ianto to name the thing [img]http://s3.images.proboards.com/tongue.gif" alt=":P" border="0"/> I'm so glad they're giving him more of a roll...
and about the stop watch, i don't know about you guys, but that didn't seem to be innuendo going on between them. I could be completely blind, and off topic, but i feel like you're expected to think that it's a slash moment, but for me i think there must be something else. And so now i'm left wondering about Ianto (not that i mind)
oush, that was a ramble... wonder if anyone will get around to reading it [img]http://s3.images.proboards.com/tongue.gif" alt=":P" border="0"/>
Yes, yes, Melinda is slow when it comes to word-play, leave me alone [img]http://s3.images.proboards.com/tongue.gif" alt=":P" border="0"/>
Spotted a bit of 'random junk' on Jack's desk tonight when we were re-watching "they Keep Killing Suzie" - he has a pair of 3D glasses draped over his lamp. The Doc's, perhaps?
Also, something ominous;
I overlooked it the first time, but Suzie says "there's something in the dark, coming for you, Jack". Was that her just freaking him out, or is there really something out there just for him...? First thing I thougth was the "army of ghosts"...for some reason, and the second was "bad wolf". I mean, I keep reading that Billie might come back one day, maybe she'll show up in Torchwood? *shrugs*
The stopwatch - even if it was a slash moment, Ianto hates Jack...or, when did he stop hating Jack?
Just watched Random Shoes!
*points excitedly* THE HAND RETURNS!!!!
I've been waiting for a Gwen/Gwynyth connection to come up - and I think that episode was just that on one level!!
Did anyone else think - when it started - "oh god, it's Love and Monsters all over again..."? It had such an Elton feel to it - "let's examine an ordinary person who's been touched by an alien object/Torchwood". But I loved it, more so than Love & Monsters. I loved how Eugene could communicate with Gwen on some level, loved how real (as in 'normal') he was.
Who was the guy who bet 15000 for the eye, though? The video store guy mentioned something really weird - something along the lines of 'an alien with six eyes' - he says it in scorn but - uhum...no one had mentioned an alien with 6 eyes, bar Jack. How did he know? The video store guy said he looked up the other bidder, perhaps he was an alien and not just some random collector?
Next week looks interesting...time travel episode by the looks, even if it is accidental [img]http://s3.images.proboards.com/smiley.gif" alt=":)" border="0"/>

Quote:The guy who bid £15,000 for the eye was supposed to have been some collector of alien artifacts. Another Henry Van Statten perhaps? (ep6 of the last season).
*shudders* Not another Van Statten...brrrr...
But...how did the video store kid specifically know that it was from an alien with 6 eyes? The only person who'd mentioned that was Jack (who seemed to know exactly what it was as soon as Gwen started talking about it...). Just seemed to be an odd thing to let slip.
