Many, many thanks to Sionainn for this beautiful banner :D
What is "Talk Like a Highlander [strike]Day[/strike] Week"?
It's something new and hopefully fun we're going to give a try on Obernet, borrowing from the parodic holiday, "
International Talk Like a Pirate Day".
During Talk Like a Highlander [strike]Day[/strike]
Week, Obernetters are encouraged to:
- dress their avatars and signatures up in a Highander-ish fashion.
- type all posts in the Highlander's way of speaking.
How??
Dressing up your signature and avatar is easy - you can use either one of the many online doll creators (such as
South Park Studio, or
eLouai), or perhaps ask a member of Obernet to create you a signature (see the
Come one, come all (sigs and avvys) thread).
As for what clothing or theme to pick? Something you think a Highlander (be it an Obernewtyn Highlander, or a Beforetime one :P ) might wear. Kilts, plaid, etc.
Dressing up your signature and avatar is in no way compulsory though so don't stress out too much if you're lost for ideas!
The
point of Talk Like a Highlander Day is to do just that -
talk like a Highlander!
You can do this by substituting words in your posts before you post them, to their Highland-ish equivalent. We've provided a table below of the common ones (please comment if you remember any more and we'll add them!).
English | Highland-ish :P |
before | afore |
between | betwixt |
can't | canna or cannay |
dagger | dirk |
didn't | dinnay |
enough | enow |
for | fer |
get | gan |
it's | tis |
know | ken |
must | mun |
my | me |
never | nivver |
no | nay |
not | nowt |
oh | och |
the | th' |
yes | aye |
you | ye |
your | yer |
For example, a post that looks like this in English:
Oh Min, you fool - don't you know it's my birthday? Where's my cake?
Might translate to this in Highlandish:
Och Min, ye fool - dinney ye ken tis me birthday? Where be me cake?
Why are we doing this?!
No reason. Just thought it might be fun. Feel free to ignore the day completely if you don't want to participate.
Those who do want to give their Highland accents a whirl, remember - it's for
one [strike]day[/strike] week a year -
15th - 21st November.
Due to the international scope of Obernet, it'll likely span a little each side of that week, in your own country :P
