Either! [img]http://s2.images.proboards.com/wink.gif" alt=";)" border="0"/>
I can't see how Ariel could possibly redeemed in a credible way. Isobelle Carmody has spent so much time detailing his cruelty that suddenly changing him to a good person would be ridiculous beyond belief. Besides, without Ariel, who else would be a threat to the Misfit community. Malik? Not while the rebel leaders sympathetic to the Misfit cause outnumber those who aren't.
EEK please no... Ariel is the token creepy character. It's a bit like in The Two Towers when Wormtail is making that semi-seductive speech to Eowyn... Ariel with his weird speeches to Elspeth. No way. Please don't let him be redeemed.
I will personally somehow transport myself into the OC and AXE MURDER Ariel myself if he and Elf gets together... it's CREEPY, DISGUSTING, DISTURBING and JUST PLAIN WRONG!!!!!
He's evil and will always be evil and nothing in this universe will make him good!
i think it would be funny.
But i dont think it would be good, they wouldnt make a ghood couple.
Though it is kind of sus that Ariel aeduces Elspeth.
Maybe he secretly liked her all along?
That would make me throw the book down in disgust! [img]http://s2.images.proboards.com/shocked.gif" alt=":o" border="0"/>
Ariel is one of my favourite characters mainly because his personality is so subtle and manipulative. For him to turn nice or fall in love with Elspeth seems completely out of character, a sort of sloppy wrapping of ends. I do think the Ariel is attracted to Elspeth in a dominating perverted way not in an 'I love you and want to make your life fulfilling'. I see Ariel's end coming in some ironic twist where something he has done backfires and turns on him.
This is an interesting topic!! Good idea!
It is an interesting topic. Certainly, he did attempt to seduce her once, key word there being 'attempt.' However, I think a redmption for Ariel is excedingly unlikely. We have evidence to prove he is a cruel, manipulative little beast who seems to have no regret for the harm and pain he causes. I just can't see him turning round and renouncing all that. Unless, of course, IC does to Ariel what all those HP Fanficcers did to Draco and makes him into a poor, misunderstood little boy. However, I think (and hope) that is not likely to happen.
As for an Ariel/Elspeth coupling, I don't think that's very plausible. It would be a twist, certainly, but I don't think Elspeth will ever forgive Ariel for the harm and grief he's caused her (Killing Selmar, Cameo etc etc)
I fervently hope it doesn't happen, it would be, I have to say, one of the few things that could make me burn The Sneding in fury [img]http://s2.images.proboards.com/tongue.gif" alt=":P" border="0"/>
There is such a thing as too many twists.
I think IC has enough material to work with without changing Ariel too much.
He doesn't need to be nice or likeable or redeemed, there are enough lovable characters already. And his tale is twisted enough, what with him being alive and the Destroyer and enmeshed in all the politics. Any more twisted and she's overworked it. Good writing is all about maintaining balance
Hee - I can totally see that happening in bad fan fic (or even possibly good fan fic). However no no no for the series itself. I love how despite being young and pretty, Ariel manages to be really repellant. Ariel/Elspeth seems even more unlikely than Harry/Draco.
WOW! That IS interesting!! Maybe we should have some fanfic challenges, and that can be the first one! Write a *plausible* way Elspeth and Ariel would get together!!
*giggles in glee* What a challenge!
As to it actually happening...no.
Redeeming...well, I don't think so. He'd have to have a lobotomy, or his memory wiped. I think he's waaay too deep in the thick of things to come out smelling of roses. There'd be no one in the misfit community who'd ever trust him, either.
As to Elspeth and Ariel...I don't see how it'd ever be a willing relationship! Elspeth despises Ariel. Ariel (possibly) killed Selmar, and was part responsible for Cameo's and a bunch of Druid's deaths / being sold into slavery.
I'm certain he's a dead man in the next book...and I doubt it'll be pretty.
Have you been reading HP fanfic, Wanderer? I keep finding a lot of Ginny / Malfoy or Hermione / Malfoy fics...I mean, it's so...unlikely!
Thanks for the link Lol! I'm always after a plausible and *decent* bit of HP fanfic!!
You're welcome! You'll have to tell me what you think, if you read it. I started a thread on fan fic in the Library ages ago - we might have to revive it.
Embarrassing question - could you remind me how to do a link properly, so it doesn't show the whole address? I'm sure I've known at some stage...
I definitely can't see Elspeth and Ariel getting together. However, there may be a chance for redemption *ducks as rotten fruit is thrown*
We don't know too much about Ariels background. Yes, he is cruel, spiteful, malicious, etc, but could that be to do with his upbringing? I mean, if he was treated that way when he was young, he won't see it as necessarily bad. Don't get me wrong, i don't like his character, i'm just thinking this through.
Scenario: Ariel is helping the Destroyer to set off the weaponmachines, and suddenly realises that everything he knows will be gone, so out of fear decides to help stop it. (Possible)
Obernewtyn is based on tolerance of others and forgiveness, so its possible that Ariel may be forgiven (but not necessarily trusted)
PMSL @ your last line.
I don't think Ariel's ever had a crisis of conscience in his life; why would he start now?

That's very true.
I still think it more likely that he dies. He's just...too dangerous. He doesn't want to change.
...or does he...?
*ponders*
I think the more likely redemption would be Domick's. I wonder if he's gone to 'the dark side' or not...I can see the Obernewtyn-ites being a lot more sympathetic to Domick asking for forgiveness than Ariel.
Lauren - I know what you mean. Want a ridiculous coupling? Apparently, there's a HP fic out there about "James and the Giant Squid". I've not come across it, but one of my fave HP parody writers mentioned it once.
I think Domick is a bit of a radical. He wants misfits to be free but doesn't see their ideals as a way to reach it. I see him joining the rebel force and feeding them information about the misfits and the council as he would see it as the only way to get the misfits accepted. (He already started doing that with Brydda). As for going to 'the dark side'...Would that mean joining Ariel? I highly doubt it. He hates Ariel. I see Domick being betrayed and crawling back to the misfits whether thats being found beaten in a cell somewhere or coming back because his cover has been blown.
Nah, by the dark side I meant completely turning on all of Obernewtyn and giving away their secrets. Hence the whole kidnapping Rushton thing...
I don't see him crawling back. I see him standing tall and taking responsibility for his actions, and whatever penalty that brings him, he'll take it. Then Rushton / Obernewtyn might forgive him. I also just really want Kella and Domick to get back together...
I have a soft spot for Domick, I'd love to see him redeemed. I also agree with Min, Domick is not the grovelling type. He wouldn't beg for forgiveness, he'd accept the consequences of his actions.
And if Kella and Domick don't get back together there'll be serious trouble... [img]http://s2.images.proboards.com/tongue.gif" alt=":P" border="0"/>
