Misfit— mis- prefix meaning ‘bad, wrong’, from Proto-Germanic missa- ‘divergent, astray’, and fit, originally ‘an adversary of equal power’; possibly from Old English fitt ‘a conflict, a struggle’
It's September 1st and [strike]we're off to Hogwarts[/strike] the Ober.net Anthology Project has officially begun. We have our theme, we have out cattle prods, we have our brains and a storm is starting. So get those typing fingers twitching--it's time to start writing.
To get you started, we're gonna get discussion going about our theme this week. Misfits: those fish out of water, those square pegs in round holes--the lone wolf. Or to take the theme more literally: someone's clothes might be a misfit.
- So, what does misfit mean to you?
- Have you ever felt like a misfit before?
- What books/movies/other media can you think of that have utilized this theme in their stories?
- We've known what the theme is for awhile, so have you already got some ideas bubbling away in those heads?
Synonyms of the word misfit include, but are certainly not limited to: dissenter, weirdo, outsider, maverick; rara avis.
And to cap of, I'm going to quote Apple Inc., of all people:
“Here's to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They're not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can't do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.â€
