I sleep next to my phone/iPad so it is right there for furious typing when my brain refuses to shut up at night. I prefer writing on paper first but finding a pen in the middle of the night--eeven if I specifically set one next to the bed--is completely impossible.

This is so true. I'm a champion procrastinator, which means my writing skills can become a little rusty due to lack of use and it can be even harder than normal to start a story. But if I write a little each day, it makes things so much easier. Except on those bad days when the words just don't behave, of course. Nothing seems to prevent those from occurring.AxeinGuanette
If I write more regularly it becomes a tad easier though.
Same here. I once plotted out a story with sub-plots and parallel storylines and it was a thing of beauty. Unfortunately, I was never able to turn it into the actual story - it was as though the beautiful, intricate plot had spoiled it! One of the reasons I like Scrivener is that I can plot without plotting. I can scribble stuff down in a brainstorming session as normal, then move them all around so they're in the right order. So far, this has helped me feel a little more organised without killing the story before the first word is even written.ariadne
I've tried planning stories before writing them, but I'm terrible at it (occasionally it actually kills my motivation). More often than not I simply write whatever comes to me directly into story format.
