Oh, has any one else noticed? We don't know anything about Rushton! ??? When he came to Obernewtyn he did not know that Michael Seraphim was his father. So....this means his mother didn't tell him who his father was and didn't tell him his last name. Why would she do that? And if Rushton did somehow know that his name was Seraphim why didn't he make the connection? you know the connection to the dead Michael Seraphim.
And why didn't Michael marry Rushton's mother, whatever her name was? I'm supposing he could have after Manda had died. And I think Ruston is younger than the Doctor. If he is then it means that Michael saw what'sher name after he was married to Manda or after Manda died.
rushton was told of his heritage by louis, thats how he would have known that his name was seraphim, he didnt know before he arrived...
im more curious to know why his mother kept his fathers identity a secret from him his entire life, and then sent him away before she died to seek out his long lost father....is she actually dead? i dont remember...
Yes she's dead. There's a some mention of her never imagining that Michael could die before her.
According to The History of the Seraphims and Obernewtyn the Doctor is younger than Rushton. In the book we are never told which brother is older and which one is younger but I always presumed that the Doctor was older for several reasons. My reasons are that when we first hear of Obernewtyn it sounds as if its been around for some time. If the Doctor is only 18(the legal age) when we meet him then he can't have been officially in charge of Obernewtyn for long and in order for Alexi and Vega to have control...
Oh, I'm not making any sense. Hold on I'll try again.
When we first hear of Obernewtyn it sounds as if it's been around for some time. Now if Stephen is 18 in Ober then sometime before that, whenever Michael died, Stephen would be underage righ? And if this was the case then the Council would've shown up and found out that he was defected, and so couldn't inherit, and theywould also kick Alexi off because he's an adopted son and also can't inherit. So when Michael died Stephen was already 18 or older. And this would make Rushton his younger brother.
oh that is so true...they are designed to confuse...
i think rushton is older, because it would make sense that manda would have been sent away unknowingly pregnant....
however, i did read somewhere...or maybe im just confusing my own interest in history, that if a child was too young to inherit when their father died, then a steward/guardian may be appointed...(although we dont know how long ago michael died...) but, it would appear that alexi & Mme Vega have been there for a while...so lets say rushton was there for about 3 years, Michael died 4-5 years ago, and Alexi & Mme Vega are/were the guardians/stewards for the doctor and used pretenses of illness of why he couldnt come with them to the council court to claim obernewtyn or something....wait, Alexi is adopted son isnt he? and he would be an obvious choice for guardian...hmmm...interesting....
other idea, who's to say the doctor was always defective? maybe he had talent (because it seems his mother had a least a knack for things) and Alexi pursued it out of him, before he started on the misfits realising he needed the "right" one...
gees my mind is just vomiting out random threads of thought....i sincerely apologise for anyone reading this and wondering what is going on...
I assume Rushton is younger, because he is already young and for his brother to be actual master of obernewtyn surely he couldn't be so young? And he is technically supposed to be master, not with guardians. I'm pretty sure Vega and Alexi were controlling and manipulating him with the pretence of being assistence and under his command, rather than being official guardians.
if Rushton was 18, the Doctor just can't have been any younger than that and inherited. Plus he's described as a short rotund man isn't he? That just automatically makes me think middle aged-as in, Michael married whoever, and then years later when she died, went back and got with Manda.
Do we really have hard evidence that Michael is dead? All we really know is that Rushton turned up and he was gone. I still think he might be alive, does anyone else think so?
I really can't say, we just have nothing to work with to give us a reasonable clue or theory. It would be interesting if Michael was still alive, there is certainly a lot of mystery involving Rushton and his family but then there is so much mystery about so many characters.
Another open question about Rushton- his Talent. I was hoping we might hear more on this in TSK, because many mentions have been made about how great it is and yet it is still latent.? The question remains why, and what would his talent or talents be if he were able to access them? I really hope we find out in the Sending. I also feel that Rushton will never truely feel Elspeth's equal until he can reach his Talent.
I got the impression in TSK that his was a new Talent, and his expansive mind that Elf found would play a role in improving distances the farseekers can travell for mindspeak.
Since I think (can't remember for sure) Elf remarks on the storage capacity of his mind being so much larger than normal.
Oo maybe his mind and her's together, like in obernewtyn will be needed to destroy the mahines? o_O
Perhaps she is made to attack him in some way with her killing power, but his mind just catches it - foils another of Ariel's schemes? then its there to draw on at a convenient moment...

I always thought that Rushton's large capacity for holding mental energy would be a big part of the last book. There's a theme all through the series of Elspeth discovering that she doesn't have to do everything on her own, I think in the end she'll find that she can rely on her friends to help her to destroy the weaponmachines and that she'll need to tap into Rushtons energy to finish the job.
Yeh I'm with you on that HotD, and it will fit really nicely, coming a full circle since she relied on Rushton in Obernewtyn.
I agree, too, I've always thought there was more to Rushton's Talent for being able to store so much. (I also think that Matthew has the same killing ability that Elspeth has).
I also forget sometimes that Henry Druid and Rushton knew each other well, that HD had befriended Rushton for a time. We haven't really seen anything of HD for a while and I don't know if we're meant to presume that he's dead or if he's been taken by slavers. Anyway, if he's in the Red Queen's Land, and Rushton is on his way there, perhaps they will meet up again?

Though it would be great if he was there to help I don't think Rushton will help destroy the weaponmachines because in the stone key the oldones wanted Elspeth to let him fall into the mindstream and die, and only after she refused to let go did they tell her how to save him, pluss it is always said that she will walk the dark path alone save for the moon watcher and the day watcher when jik's dog comes. But who knows there might be a twist because I do belive that there is more to Rushton's latent talant then meets the eye. As for Rushtons past I am intreged about his moon hating grandmoter and her reaction to the twenty family gypsies.
